As with any learning institution, there are positives and negatives to be weighed with the private school system.  The following is a list of some of the pros and cons for private schools.

Private School Positives
  • Private schools offer smaller class sizes.
  • Parents can shop around and find the school that fits their budget and academic or religious goals.
  • Some private schools are based on a unique educational philosophy or approach. Examples include Montessori and Waldorf schools.
  • Certain private schools focus on educating students with disabilities.
  • Private schools typically have better books and supplies, with more access to up-to-date computers.
  • Curriculum can be more challenging.

Private School Negatives
  • Cost.
  • Teachers are often not required to have a teaching degree, just knowledge of the subject they will be teaching.
  • Fewer choices in subject material.
  • Fewer special education options available.
  • Often students must pass an entrance exam to be admitted.
  • Fewer available options for extracurricular activities and sports.
  • Typically less diversity in teachers and student body than the public school system.
